Let's take a look! It was tense television to watch at the best of times, and at the worst of them, we all legitimately felt very, very attached to the story. We all always had that sneaking suspicion that John Abruzzi was a bad guy — and by suspicion, we mean factual evidence. Still, it was hard not to root for the guy. He was despicable at times and really weird at others, but the role was acted to perfection and that always helps to make something come to life.
There was a lot to love about the storyline and a lot to hate, too, with most of the things to hate being in relation to T-Bag who really did come into his own in this episode. From going into the prison with blueprints tattooed onto his body all the way through to the final escape itself, it is nearly impossible not to love the way this guy went about his business. First the loyalty to the "company" and this one is nearly easy to counter: let them shoot the first bullet and then shoot them all down.
And if you can capture one or two try to get into some exchange of arguments, even striking arguments if necessary, to make them change allegiances and then loyalties. But then you have the official services that are supposed to enforce the law, security services and justice.
Both are supposed to develop a rational loyalty to the country, the fatherland, the motherland, the constitution, or whatever charter or declaration of universal human and civil rights.
But how can you recognize at the bottom of the institution or outside that the order given to you is respectful of such principles, and such orders can come from a long may up the ladder of authority and if my boss tells me something he must have his good reasons to do so, and I have to obey, don't I? And then think within the frame of local police, state police, FBI, Homeland Security, Secret Services, Presidential Security and many others and you have the full picture.
Think within the frame of elected officials of the police, justice, judicial administration, justice department, etc. Good luck at surviving in that maze. But the main loyalty is the loyalty you owe to those who have helped you in a difficult situation, those who have been your associates in some ethical project, even if it is to escape from a prison. And this loyalty is of course all the more powerful if we are speaking family.
This started in like Supernatural and in both cases you have two brothers, the elder one less brainy, the younger one brainier, with a mother that disappeared in their young age.
They are not real brothers, be it only because they family names are not the same, but they were raised together and after the disappearance of their mother, and later father, the elder one takes care of the younger one and even puts him through college and university to the level of engineer.
But his means were not always very swift and they were often criminal. Those two brothers who are not brothers and yet are brothers have no mother till very late in the series and the mother is such a caricature that they can only deny her motherhood that she refuses anyway and what's more they do not have no father any more, though he makes a quick come back to disappear by falling on a bullet. The two series are so similar along that family line that there must have been some leak from the one to the other.
But Prison Break is one story line and one plot, not episodes that have little to do with one another and a rather loose general line. Of course Prison Break has to come to an end, whereas Supernatural can last forever. The two brothers are Michael and Lincoln, just like the two brothers in Supernatural are supposed to be the vessels of archangel Michael and Lucifer. The parallel between Lincoln and Lucifer is of course hilarious but not gratuitous.
Lincoln the liberator of the Blacks, Lucifer the liberator of the Apocalypse, of the human species once and for all, or till the next whimsical caprice of God who could recreate his imperfect creation a second time in a few eons. And the last episode is discreet about the death of Michael with one blood drop and a few light headaches, and then we skip four years and discover his son and Sara his wife but no father coming on his tomb with Alex, Sucre and Lincoln for some anniversary in some Central American country.
The Final Break episode explains what happened and that episode is so phenomenally emotional with the post-mortem video message from Michael explaining why is not here any more. Absolutely beautiful. But also very Christian. The liberty of all and the punishment of the real criminal minds can only come through the sacrifice of one member of the team and the flight as fast and as far as possible of the only one that is menaced still, Sara, the Mary Magdalene of this modern Christ.
Michael Scofield, MS in civil engineering, has to be sacrificed with his superior knowledge and intelligence. We will regret that in the final episode Lincoln's son is not brought back on his uncle's tomb with the rest of the family that includes Alex and Sucre who are not really members of the family. A brilliant experience.
BeneCumb 7 January Quite an ordeal, I would say, but digital television and Internet are presently of great help. For almost half-a- year, it seemed that prisoners and wardens were part of my family entertainment : In general, I am satisfied, as I was with Dexter and Breaking Bad, although - contrary to many other viewers - I liked the episodes outside prisons more than inside: they were more versatile, without space limitations, paving the way for bolder twists and solutions, but adding some airy-fairy scenes and elements e.
Thus, I find seasons 2 and 4 most varying. The other female performances were not solid enough me, probably due to the nature of their characters, but still not boring or annoying. Prisons and prisoners, however, are not "cool", so I can't see any promotion of "wrong" values to the rising generation, for example.
BeneCumb 10 June Sometimes it happens that even a series rounded-up so well continues to be popular on and on, tempting the producers and performers to exploit its fame and reputation even more. Evidently, it is the case here as well, with additional amount of sophistication and the inclusion of all previous main characters who yet have no more absolutely necessary part to play e. Fernando Sucre and Paul Kellerman. Well, most of them who enjoyed all the first 4 season episodes in sequence, would breeze through this sequel without any major frustration, but those who began their first familiarization here would probably be surprised why this series has been praised so much.
During the first couple seasons this show was great. Although the premise was a bit thin, a guy robs a bank to go to prison with his brother and then has no problem getting to his brother once inside. A bit far fetched for me but it got really good after that. I was even able to overlook the ridiculous idea of them escaping and then ending up in a South American prison, which they were also able to easily escape. After that it just got stupid. They brought in Michael Rappaport as a cop??
But that wasn't even why the show got bad, they were just out of story ideas. It's a shame to see such a great show die such a horrible, prolonged death but I'm getting use to it. Watch the first three seasons and act like that was all there was. Amyth47 5 December Truly, the showrunners have done an outstanding job creating and executing this series. This is one of the few shows whose every season is great and is consistent in quality.
I truly cared for all the characters in the show, even the bad guys. I have yet to come across a TV show which is this engaging and this addictive.
Please, please let me know if there is anything out there which matches Prison Break. This is the show I judge other shows by and in certain ways nothing has ever come close There are very few really great serials, like Lexx, or X-Files, or some more.
Prison Break stands out, because it is very special, very smart and very clever. It seems to be simple, but then, a real suspense starts when Michael Scofield, a hero of Miller, gets to the same prison, too, only to give way to his devilishly tricky plan. Here, we meet an amazing array of multi-faceted characters, each with his own little world and his own tragedy.
You really have to see this excellent, episodes serial, full of head-breaking troubles and worries. Then, there is a political level in this film, the story of a corrupt Vice-President and her aids, which can do everything she asks them to. Then, there is a beautiful love story of Michael and Sarah, a prison physician, who is in real doubt, and she doesn't know whether to help him out or not. And all of this is knitted tightly together in one absolutely marvelous serial, executed so well and so impeccably decently.
Every time one episode ends, you feel sorry if you cannot watch the next right now. This is a sign of real strong film production. You have to watch it; this is not a banal, trite or beaten-down, well-trodden idea. Nay, this one looms fresh and vivid, brisk and exhilarating. Angelus2 19 August Lincoln Burrows is a thug who has been sent to Deathrow for the murder of the 'Vice-Presidents' brother. All the evidence points to guilty, yet Michael, Lincoln's little brother is adamant that Linc is innocent and puts together a mind-boggling plan of infiltration and escape.
Yes, this is a story of a man trying to escape the 'Hell' that is prison. But with a difference, Michael tattoo's his entire plan on his body; hidden by images of demons and chapels with angels. I was deeply fascinated by the first season and lost interest half-way through the second and decided to watch the show after it finished.
And I have to say I'm impressed at how the story goes on and on. I've heard people say the third season is repetitive but I found it fascinating and how Michael changes his plan to fit his new surroundings.
The fourth season was a little 'Out-there' Everyone who seemed to die, came back which made it a little annoying and implementing the 'Mother' was a little confusing. I loved Mahone from the first moment, he was just as clever as Michael and more ruthless. I loved his change through the seasons from 'Pursuer' to 'Killer' to 'Protector' to 'loyal friend'. Michael is a character who you would definitely want as your friend or uncle, able to make a plan out of the littlest of resources.
And Bellick's change of persona was quite tear-jerking; how fragile he becomes in season four and makes the ultimate decision for justice. I feel I should mention T-Bag, simply because of Mister Knepper, who is dazzling on screen as the terrifying and charming at times killer.
The script got a little bad and acting from the two lead actors, Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell were stale for a better word; they pulled it off. One word of warning After season four finished with the episode, 'Killing your number' don't watch the next two episodes There's just something so heavenly about getting stuck into a new season of 24 on DVD, just enjoying such interesting characters and fast moving stories.
I do like But for some reason, it just doesn't resonate for me strongly enough to compel me to write about it. I still haven't seen season five, which I've heard is the best so far, and I'm looking forward to it.
My friend Tara Dilullo wrote a book about 24 , by the way. I haven't read it yet, but Tara is a terrific writer and I recommend anything she's written. I'm so glad to see that you're a Prison Break fan also. A friend talked me into watching it mid-season last year when FX had a marathon and re-aired a bunch of the earlier episodes. It is soooooo good. And yes, what woman doesn't love Michael Scofield :-? Also, I just recently got hooked on Lost and really enjoyed your reviews.
You and I were so on the same page when you kept saying "Would everyone quit hurting Sawyer? Hi, Billie!! I'm Chofi, from Spain. I sent you an e-mail a while ago, maybe you remember me I've recently started to watch Prison Break and It's just amazing, one of the most intense and intelligent shows I've ever seen like Lost on his First Season I just was wondering that it would be nice if you review PB as well, because I think it really deserves it : Besotes ;-. Hi Billie, I really enjoy reading your reviews of Lost and would love to see you reviewing Prison Break in the near future.
I know you are already doing four shows but maybe you can drop one for Prison Break? Wishing thinking on my part. Going back to the show, I have to agree with you Prison Break is one of the most exciting series in years. I was hooked from the 1st show and it doesn't hurt that they have such good looking actors for convicts. Each character is so compelling and even though some are so dispicable they still fascinate me.
I hated t-bag at the beginning of the show but now that we know more his character he as growned on me.
I mean I still hate that he is a pedophile at all but Robert K. I just hope they don't kill him off. He's so different from the rest of them and he's the guy you love to hate. Hi Billie, I've been watching Prison Break. I've also chose "you're fine with what you're doing right now" when you had a poll about doing other series.
I only did it because I felt guilty enjoying reading your comments of Lost and BSG so much with no gratitude. However, every time I watch an episode of Prison Break, I immidiately go to your site just like I do after every episode of Lost and BSG just to be reminded you don't cover this show. All in all, I aggre - it's an awsome show, one of its biggest disadvantages is that you don't cover it. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage.
